Pennsic XVI - Pre-History (1987)
 In 1987, Sam, Fitz, Lea, and Keith—who were living in Norfolk, Virginia and attending Old Dominion University at the time—heard about an event called the Pennsic War from a mutual friend. Intrigued (bored college students?), and with only one week to prepare, they set off for a long weekend to see what Pennsic was about. They were allowed to camp with an established, formal SCA Household. All four friends camped together in one tent which in their wisdom, they set up on top of many rocks, on a hill and in the direct sunlight. Keith claimed the majority of the sleeping space, so Sam, Lea and Fitz were squished up in the corner of the tent and following the rules of gravity, at the bottom of the hill. Fitz, claiming he never got sunburned, returned from war with a scarlet, blistered neck and shoulders. Sam was pursued throughout Pennsic by the former owner of the notorious green velvet dress! Despite all of our troubles, we saw the potential in Pennsic and began to plan our return the following year as a clan, in our own camping space.
